Humanoid

The air was cold. So cold that the humans below were shivering violently underneath their warm woolen coats. Their necks covered with scarves and buttoned up to the chin and with heads bowed; they walked quickly, not noticing the figure watching them from the roof. Even though it wasn't quite winter yet, the snow fell quietly onto the leaf strewn ground. The sound of crushed leaves filled the air and mingled with the sounds of the city at night.


He liked it here. No one bothered to look up to the roof in the winter, they were all too concerned about staying warm and tucking their chin into their coats as far as they could.  The air whirled around the rooftops, whistling as it went and ruffling peoples hair so they pulled their coats tighter around their bodies.

As the wind blew in his direction, he caught the strong scent of one human, and wrinkled his nose in disgust as he identified the source of his discomfort. She was a street walker, someone that one of his kind considered easy prey. She was the only one walking in a zig zag pattern and singing loudly to herself. Drunk, he thought dismissively as he turned his head in the direction of the city. He paid no attention to her as she was assailed by a customer and off they went laughing.


He had no time for such pleasures. He took them only when needed and rarely had the desire to seduce one of them. He knew his talents and used them when they were called for and that was rarely for his own pleasure. He sighed, running his pierced tongue along the points that made him more than human.


Leaping from the roof he had occupied, the creature hit the ground and landed like a cat with barely a sound. Straitening his coat and scarf, he stepped into the lamp light; ignoring the stares he received from the people around him.

He knew he was beautiful, heartbreakingly so. It was a blessing and a curse, to be so different from all the others.  Even his own kind admired his beauty and praised his ability to astound and surpass human comprehension.  His heels clicked loudly on the sidewalk as he made his way quickly to the heart of the city. Some of the hottest parties of the night would be in the center of the city and he intended to be there to find his next meal. The men looked at him in disgust and the women looked surprised to see an already tall man wearing black leather platform boots. His upper lip curled at their expressions and resisted the urge to smack the looks off of their faces.

Stupid fools, he thought contemptuously.


The club was straight ahead, and it was playing his favorite song; Humanoid. He identified with the song because he often felt Humanoid. An imitation of a Human, yet not human at all but some small part of him still believed he was human. He was indeed against the world, against love, and faith; he was dead to all of these and there was nothing he could do about it....

A short sigh escaped his mouth as he flashed his Id to the bouncer at the club.  

He walked into a loud wall of music and immediately stopped to enjoy and absorb the shock. Music was the only thing nowadays to lift his dead spirit. Singing was next in line and together, they were the only things that ever made him happy. A smile danced on his full lips as the music pulled and teased at his senses and through his half closed eyes he watched the colors and lights dance on the humans who had lost themselves to the music.


He was jealous; foolish humans. Insignificant they were to him, walking meals and yet they had something he desired the most in the world; life. They were full of life, living to the fullest, reaching the extent of their happiness easily and though he was more powerful, stronger, faster, and more intelligent than any of them would ever be, he would never again have life.

He pushed his depressing thoughts aside as he made his way through the crowd, noticing the way the girls would “accidentally” bump or push up against him. He felt their hips and their soft curved bodies like ghosts against his pale skin.  Another sarcastic smile spread across his face as a girl, barely 17, stumbled right into his arms. He pushed her away and made his way to the back of the club where he would sit and scope out his next meal. He sat down in his usual spot and kept his sunglasses on so that he could stare without getting noticed.


First step was to identify his prey by smell. Closing his eyes, he let the scents of the people around him go in and out of his nose. If there was a scent that lingered, he would follow it. As he got closer to the intended prey, he would determine how old they were, how gullible they would be and what they had been eating or drinking. A lot of his choice of meal depended on what type of drink they had been drinking; their blood would be saturated with it and would give it a taste he couldn’t get otherwise. It was like choosing a fine wine; it didn't matter what the person looked like if they had blood rich and full with taste.  The music screamed "Gimme more, gimme more/ Can't get enough" and he nodded in subconsciously in agreement. He could always use more and yet all he wanted was life. But life was in the blood, wasn't it? To get life, you must cause death.



Next would be the actual seduction, or in some cases all he had to do was stare at his intended and the inebriated person would just walk off with him into a dark alley and let him do whatever he wanted with them.


Thirdly, he would depose of the body. Sometimes he would use his connections with the creatures of the night to dispose of a body. Cannibalism was common with many night creatures and although the creatures were not Zombies, they were close enough for his liking. The creatures were commonly called flesh eaters, and often paired with his kind because everyone knew that where a vampire was; there would be dead bodies to be disposed of. Crude as it was and as disgusting as it seemed, it was his way of life and it could never be changed.
He always felt empty after a feeding. The warm blood would rush through his cold veins, yet he never felt more painfully alive. It was times like these that he wondered why he was alive at all..

He mouthed the words to the song, and his beautiful voice matched that of the singers so well, no one noticed him screaming in tune to the music. While basking in the sound, a smell tickled his nose and he rose to follow it. The music was a pounding in his ears as the familiar thrill of the chase rose within him. There are still some activities that please me, he thought with a rush. He spotted the smell and a soft sigh escaped him; this would be one of those rare nights that he would enjoy his sport.


The girl was all soft curves, big eyes and long tangled hair. Her lips were full and naturally red, needing no makeup or embellishment. Her body twisted and turned to the music, her eyes half closed and she was barely conscious of the many pairs of eyes that stared at her hungrily. He stood there watching her, intrigued and amazed at her simple beauty. He loved the way her body moved to the music, his music and he intended to thank her personally. Did he have to kill her? No. It was easier to kill her, but he didn’t feel like killing such an innocent beauty that the world often lacked. Make her into one of us? He wondered at that, but decided against it. He would not be that selfish no matter how lonely he was.


What to do, what to do, he mused. He decided that he would have just a taste; make sure she didn't get killed or maimed, and make sure she would never recognize his face ever again. He might be heartless, but he wasn't evil. The images of what he would do with her flashed through his mind and his lips lifted into a smile that would melt a heart of ice. He made his way to the girl, weaving artfully through the crowd, while the song played on.
